Brushtail Possums and diet

I'm really concerned about the amount of juvenile or sub adult possums that come into care for rehabilatation that should never have been taken out of the wild. Then the so called well meaning people feed the possum fruit or stuff that sits and fements in their stomack. they often end up with bloat or the new diet completly wrecks their gut so that they have to be euthainzed. Male Brustails particulary when taken out of the home range for any length of time usually cannot be succesfuly released back as the other males take over their territory and when released the possums are usually killed out right or picked on till they die. The other things that goes for all wildlife is that people should never keep animals in care without the right knowledge. Their is alot of mis information on diets just look at the glider forums. The diets we give them should be more like their native diets

What a bummer just picked up another Brushtail form teh vet and thye didnt get details on where it was picked up from and absoultly nothinmg wrong with it. It''s a female and they are territorial and now I have to figue out what to do with a adult Brustail. It pisses me off that people keep picking them up and bringing them in. It sfine for them they dont have to deal with what to do with them now. I shoudl have refused taking her form the vet or else they will never learn. Next time I am refusing to pick up if there is no deatils. All they gave me was a road it was picked up from but the road runs from one suburb to the next. I will take her back out tonight and try to release he in a big reserve close to the road she was picked up form and hope she can find her way home again. People need ot knwo to leave wildlife in the wild or at least give an address on where they come from.

Just to add to this Possum love native flora so a good selection of native blossums and branches with fresh shoots and plenty of fresh water for older possums. younger animals need milk but never use cows milk. If a baby comes in get it to a carer who know how to keep the baby at the right temperature and what type of milk and how often to feed and how much milk each feed. Babies also need to be toileted as a mother would normal stimulate the cloaca to cause urinating and defecating
